Outfit of the Day: Errands around the city

American Apparel oversized tank, Target leggings, Old Navy sandals, Ray-Ban Classic Wayfarers, Michael Kors Watch, MAC Viva Glam I lipstick (not shown)

New York, New York

I love Fridays! This is the day that I call my “errands, laundry, & homework” day. I have no classes on Friday, therefore I go ahead and get my groceries, do my laundry, and run errands on this day. Although it’s not the most fun of all things, I still love walking around the city running errands. I even love grocery shopping at Trader Joe’s! Call me a food geek, but it’s one of my favorite things I enjoy doing in college. It’s nice to have this day off because A: I have 3-day weekends every week, and B: I get all of my chores out of the way before the actual weekend! 72 degrees and perfect. Today felt like Cali weather! Whenever I feel California weather in the air, I can’t help but be a little homesick of living in California :( But don’t get me wrong, I’m still loving the East Coast! Enjoying these last few days of warm weather… bring it on Fall weather!

I decided to go comfy-casual today. Leggings are a great staple, and I love American Apparel oversized tops. A top knot bun is a must — my hair is out of the way and it really makes everything look put together. Red lips and a gold watch and you’re good to go! Better go get my clothes out of the dryer… Enjoy!

Outfit of the Day: School & Work

Thrifted sweater, Dittos jeans, Tory Burch Reva flats, Forever 21 necklace, Michael Kors watch, FIT tote bag, MAC Yung Rapunxel lipstick (limited edition)

New York, New York

Happy Wednesday! Halfway through the week, almost there! I just had my Marketing class this morning and then went to work. For those of you who are wondering, I’m a clerical assistant for the Pre-College office at FIT! It’s a great job; very relaxed and laid back. It’s convenient and manageable with my school work. I love it so far!

I decided to go with one of my signature pieces for Fall and Winter: my oversized thrifted sweater! Such a staple and classic for me, it’s my all-time fave! Of course I wore my Revas… seriously obsessed with these Tory Burch flats. I have another pair in mind I want to invest in soon; they are so worth the money as much as I wear mine! Classic dark wash skinny jeans and my oversized gold boyfriend watch. Love! I found this necklace at Forever 21 yesterday for $9.80! Chunky gold chains are very in this season and I’m loving the trend! I did my usual loose Lauren Conrad inspired waves, and wore my new lipstick I purchased at Fashion’s Night Out! It has a more purple undertone in person, but looks more magenta in this picture. I’ll try to do another OOTD tomorrow, I get so much positive feedback from my OOTD’s! I’m really glad everyone enjoys them as much as I enjoy doing them!

Welcome to the Fashion Institute of Technology. Students entering this year’s class will become part of a community alive with creative energy and surrounded by people who love what they do.

March 31st, 2012 was one of the proudest and most fulfilling moments of my life. This was the day I got my acceptance letter from FIT!! I remember reading these two sentences (as quoted above) for the first time and feeling a rush of adrenaline go throughout my body; it’s an indescribable feeling. These two sentences describe everything that I have always looked for in a school. To this day, I sometimes still can’t believe that this school exists, and I go to it! I am so thankful for this oppurtunity that I have earned. My family has done so much in order for me to take full advantage of this oppurtunity. I am humble for all that they’ve done and couldn’t thank them enough. And, of course, the endless support I have received from everyone! I am truly speechless.

I always love looking back at this picture because I can still remember exactly what I was thinking when this picture was taken. The excitement, the adrenaline, and mainly the fact that I was speechless! Hopefully the mailman forgave me for stalking him for a week straight…

I have always kept myself updated in the cyber world of fashion, beauty, and food; I love reading fashion and beauty blogs, along with watching beauty videos on YouTube. I have probably done this since my freshman year of high school, but I never got around to starting my ownblog. Recently, I have been “blogging” a lot on Facebook (Instagram, statuses, pictures, etc.) and cluttering up everyones news feed with it! Well, I feel like the time has come… it’s time to move over to a blog! This is perfect timing since I’m now a freshman in college, and living in a city full of my three most favorite things in the world: fashion, beauty, and food. Let me tell you a little about myself…

For starters, my name is Lilly Truscott (nice to meet you!) and I live in the best city in the world: New York, NY. I am shy of a month into my first semester at the Fashion Institute of Technology, and I absolutely love it. Although I have been through many hoops, loops, and obstacles in order to obtain being a college student in New York City, every step along the way was absolutely worth it. I feel like FIT (FYI: short for Fashion Institute of Technology) is the perfect school for me. I am so thankful that I automatically sensed that FIT was the perfect school when I was a junior in high school. For many college students, I know that making decisions regarding the rest of your life can be difficult. Luckily, I just knew. The most difficult part about this experience was actually applying to FIT and waiting 6 months (yes, that’s how long I waited) to hear back! I am incredibly fortunate to be a student at FIT because of one statistic that I didn’t learn until the Dean of the school mentioned it upon my arrival: FIT received 20,000 applications for the Fall 2012 semester, and 1,500 got in. I have no idea how Istood out among the other applicants, but I did! Even though I was an absolute wreck of nervousness during those 6 months of waiting, it was flat-out worth it. I will never forget the day I got my acceptance letter; one of the proudest and most fulfilling moments in my life.

I’m sure many of you are wondering, what is she majoring in? Fashion Design? Nope! I get that a lot though! Many people who ask me where I go to school automatically assume that I would be majoring in Fashion Design at the Fashion Institute of Technology after all, right? But, that is only one of the many majors at FIT! The Fashion Institute is a very specified school with specific majors preparing students to work in a specific industry (e.g. the fashion industry). They have two schools: the School of Art & Design and the Jay and Patty Baker School of Business and Technology. In the Art & Design School, there are a variety of majors such as Graphic Design, Jewelry Design, Fabric Styling, Toy Design, and many more! In the Business School, there are a variety of majors such as Fashion Merchandising Management, Advertising & Marketing Communications, International Trade & Marketing for the Fashion Industries, and of course many more. FIT is a 4-year associate’s and bachelor’s degree program meaning it’s a “2+2 school”. A FIT student will earn their associate’s degree after their first 2 years, and then continue on to earn their bachelor’s degree during their last 2 years. So now that I have given you the ultimate FIT bio in a nutshell, let me finally tell you what I’m majoring in!

I am earning my associate’s degree in Advertising & Marketing Communications and my bachelor’s degree in Cosmetics & Fragrance Marketing! Basically, AMC (Advertising & Marketing Communications) is a major that gives a broad perspective on advertising, marketing, public relations, and the communication between all three of them. I’m taking courses based on all three aspects, giving me a solid base of the business industry. This will prepare me for my bachelor’s degree in Cosmetics & Fragrance Marketing. Cos-Frag (short for Cosmetics & Fragrance Marketing), is a very specific major that focuses on the business side of the beauty industry.

This industry consists of anything that has to do with cosmetics, skin care, hair care, fragrance, and much more! Basically, I will learn how the business of beauty works: For example, how does Sephora or MAC market their products for women during a recession? Who creates every CoverGirl make-up display that you see in every Walgreens in America? The beauty industry is an always evolving and growing industry. In fact, it is the only industry that grew an 11% increase during the recession! Even though money is tight during tough economic times, women will always want to indulge in a small luxury product such as a nice lipstick or perfume (think about it, girls!). A cool fact about this major is FIT didn’t create this major for their school. Industry professionals from the beauty industry actually gathered together and created this major with FIT because they are striving for FIT students that are trained and prepared to work in this industry! In order to work, you must have a specific set of skills and knowledge for this industry. A basic marketing degree isn’t enough! They need students to know specific things such as how make-up is created, manufactured, and produced.

It’s funny how most girls who are interested in fashion always want to be in the fashion industry dreaming to work for Michael Kors, Vogue, or Marc Jacobs. Who knew that there is a whole other industry out there that’s for make-up, perfume, etc. working for some of the same brands! You would never think that there are actual jobs out there such as working in the marketing headquarters for Sephora, working for Marc Jacobs fragrances, or even working for CoverGirl! I mean, someone has to create those CoverGirl make-up displays for every Walgreens in America! It’s definitely not the first type of job that pops up in your head when you think about the job possibilities out there. I have always had a flair and passion for anything beauty related — I love doing hair, make-up, and taking care of my skin. Perfume is a plus! The fact that the beauty industry is striving for FIT students makes me even more excited and motivated than ever. I cannot wait for that fulfilling moment of working at a job that I love and am good at, and being paid to do it! The possibilities are endless in my favorite city in the world, and I absolutely cannot wait for my junior and senior year.
