FINALLY. After many requests from friends and family, I have finally decided to start my very own blog! I have always kept myself updated in the cyber world of fashion, beauty, and food; I love reading fashion and beauty blogs, along with watching beauty videos on YouTube. I have probably done this since my freshman year of high school, but I never got around to starting my ownblog. Recently, I have been “blogging” a lot on Facebook (Instagram, statuses, pictures, etc.) and cluttering up everyones news feed with it! Well, I feel like the time has come… it’s time to move over to a blog! This is perfect timing since I’m now a freshman in college, and living in a city full of my three most favorite things in the world: fashion, beauty, and food. Let me tell you a little about myself…
For starters, my name is Lilly Truscott (nice to meet you!) and I live in the best city in the world: New York, NY. I am shy of a month into my first semester at the Fashion Institute of Technology, and I absolutely love it. Although I have been through many hoops, loops, and obstacles in order to obtain being a college student in New York City, every step along the way was absolutely worth it. I feel like FIT (FYI: short for Fashion Institute of Technology) is the perfect school for me. I am so thankful that I automatically sensed that FIT was the perfect school when I was a junior in high school. For many college students, I know that making decisions regarding the rest of your life can be difficult. Luckily, I just knew. The most difficult part about this experience was actually applying to FIT and waiting 6 months (yes, that’s how long I waited) to hear back! I am incredibly fortunate to be a student at FIT because of one statistic that I didn’t learn until the Dean of the school mentioned it upon my arrival: FIT received 20,000 applications for the Fall 2012 semester, and 1,500 got in. I have no idea how Istood out among the other applicants, but I did! Even though I was an absolute wreck of nervousness during those 6 months of waiting, it was flat-out worth it. I will never forget the day I got my acceptance letter; one of the proudest and most fulfilling moments in my life.
I’m sure many of you are wondering, what is she majoring in? Fashion Design? Nope! I get that a lot though! Many people who ask me where I go to school automatically assume that I would be majoring in Fashion Design at the Fashion Institute of Technology after all, right? But, that is only one of the many majors at FIT! The Fashion Institute is a very specified school with specific majors preparing students to work in a specific industry (e.g. the fashion industry). They have two schools: the School of Art & Design and the Jay and Patty Baker School of Business and Technology. In the Art & Design School, there are a variety of majors such as Graphic Design, Jewelry Design, Fabric Styling, Toy Design, and many more! In the Business School, there are a variety of majors such as Fashion Merchandising Management, Advertising & Marketing Communications, International Trade & Marketing for the Fashion Industries, and of course many more. FIT is a 4-year associate’s and bachelor’s degree program meaning it’s a “2+2 school”. A FIT student will earn their associate’s degree after their first 2 years, and then continue on to earn their bachelor’s degree during their last 2 years. So now that I have given you the ultimate FIT bio in a nutshell, let me finally tell you what I’m majoring in!
I am earning my associate’s degree in Advertising & Marketing Communications and my bachelor’s degree in Cosmetics & Fragrance Marketing! Basically, AMC (Advertising & Marketing Communications) is a major that gives a broad perspective on advertising, marketing, public relations, and the communication between all three of them. I’m taking courses based on all three aspects, giving me a solid base of the business industry. This will prepare me for my bachelor’s degree in Cosmetics & Fragrance Marketing. Cos-Frag (short for Cosmetics & Fragrance Marketing), is a very specific major that focuses on the business side of the beauty industry.
This industry consists of anything that has to do with cosmetics, skin care, hair care, fragrance, and much more! Basically, I will learn how the business of beauty works: For example, how does Sephora or MAC market their products for women during a recession? Who creates every CoverGirl make-up display that you see in every Walgreens in America? The beauty industry is an always evolving and growing industry. In fact, it is the only industry that grew an 11% increase during the recession! Even though money is tight during tough economic times, women will always want to indulge in a small luxury product such as a nice lipstick or perfume (think about it, girls!). A cool fact about this major is FIT didn’t create this major for their school. Industry professionals from the beauty industry actually gathered together and created this major with FIT because they are striving for FIT students that are trained and prepared to work in this industry! In order to work, you must have a specific set of skills and knowledge for this industry. A basic marketing degree isn’t enough! They need students to know specific things such as how make-up is created, manufactured, and produced.
It’s funny how most girls who are interested in fashion always want to be in the fashion industry dreaming to work for Michael Kors, Vogue, or Marc Jacobs. Who knew that there is a whole other industry out there that’s for make-up, perfume, etc. working for some of the same brands! You would never think that there are actual jobs out there such as working in the marketing headquarters for Sephora, working for Marc Jacobs fragrances, or even working for CoverGirl! I mean, someone has to create those CoverGirl make-up displays for every Walgreens in America! It’s definitely not the first type of job that pops up in your head when you think about the job possibilities out there. I have always had a flair and passion for anything beauty related — I love doing hair, make-up, and taking care of my skin. Perfume is a plus! The fact that the beauty industry is striving for FIT students makes me even more excited and motivated than ever. I cannot wait for that fulfilling moment of working at a job that I love and am good at, and being paid to do it! The possibilities are endless in my favorite city in the world, and I absolutely cannot wait for my junior and senior year.
